What data we collect and why

This website collects and uses personal information for the following reasons:

Visitor tracking

This site uses Google Analytics to track your interaction. We use this data to determine the number of people using the site, to better understand how they find and use the web pages and to see their journey through the site in order to improvement the user experiences. Although Google Analytics stores data such as your device type, location, Internet browser and operating system,  the information is insufficient identify you personally in any way. Google holds a record of your computer’s IP address which could be used to identify you to it, but it does not grant permission for this site to access this information.

Usability Improvements

This site is design on the popular WordPress system, which will also collect data on you. This data, again, cannot identify you to us and is used primarily to ensure WordPress is running correctly and smoothly and is also used to improve the software. As such, WordPress and third party widget developers may collect data similar to Google, but they do not share it with this website.

Contact form and email links

If you contact Gavin through either the webform on the contacts page, or an email link such as photo@gavinparsons.co.uk at the very least your email address and name will be collected and stored to allow Gavin to respond to your request. None of the data you supply is passed to or processed by a third party. Contact emails are  converted and sent to Gavin Parsons over the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).

The servers we use are protected by TLS (sometimes known as SSL) meaning that the data is encrypted using SHA-2, 256-bit cryptography before being sent across the internet. The email content is then decrypted by a local computer and or mobile device.

However, not all mail servers are secured in such a way. Therefore, we would suggest that you always consider email as an insecure medium and not include personal, confidential or otherwise sensitive information within an email.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
